Searching for a Heart of PopCulture
The club Indigo has been a part of Blekingska nationen since 1994, but their intimate stage still attracts the live acts. The pop club was found at the top of the nation club pulse this October.
Straight after 11 p.m., in the glow of pink neon light, the audience come flocking to the nation.
It is “every other Friday”, which means that Blekingska once again opens their long-running club, Indigo – this very evening with the dreamy pop quartet YAST on stage.
“We constantly evaluate our club concepts, to keep up to date. I believe this is the reason for Indigo being able to stay alive for so long, says nation curator Cecilia Patriksson.
She brings out the pop club’s soul sojourns as an example of features that have strengthened the concept lately. And it is exactly initiatives like these, arising from the people active at the nation that usually end up well, says the curator.
“We usually say that the club has evolved and moved within the genre, not unlike Håkan Hellström, which is suitable since he is something of a house god.”
The lounge is soon crammed with people waiting for the band of the evening to get on stage. The Berliner Judith Streicher, who is here on a one year Erasmus exchange as a part of her environment engineer education, puts emphasis on the intimate atmosphere in the club.
“Right from the start, it has been a welcoming environment at the small club premises and the lounge. That is what I appreciate here. At many other nation clubs there have been a feeling of anonymity.”
In the adjacent room, one of the two club organizers for the evening, Jimmy Sok, is busy putting the last things straight before YAST enter the stage. This is his third term as club official and he directs his co-workers with a sure hand.
“We work hard and try to book as many quality acts as possible, within the limit of the budget. That is a part of our successful concept”, says the 23-year-old, who otherwise is a photography student at Malmö Högskola.
So what marks you out?
“To put it simply, we offer pop music. The visitors appreciate it”, says Cecilia Patriksson before she, being an old bartender, gets behind the bar to help another collegue out.
